Boo to the Nanny State
September 21st 2006 21:44
Greetings blogophiles. It's very good of you to join me today as we reflect together on the issue of day which, as you can no doubt tell from the title, is the Nanny State.
I don't know about you but for me, one of the most infuriating things is to see my hard earned cash being thrown away by some profligate bureaucrat trying to keep himself employed by dreaming up public awareness campaigns to tell me to do things I'm either already doing or which I'd never take up in a month of Sundays.
The chief offender in this in NSW is the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). I was driving home the other day and stopped in a queue for the lights beneath a huge overhead banner which proudly bore an advertisement from the RTA. It was professionally produced, the graphics were spectacular, the slogan catchy and the production values outstanding. Some advertising guru had no doubt been paid thousands of dollars to dream up the copy and endless committee hours must have gone in to devising the strategy. As I waited for the green light I found myself pondering how many of our hard earned tax dollars must have been poured into the production of just that one banner. And what did it say?
SEATBELTS SAVE TRUCKIES TOO
For God's sake, please spare me. Did I really need to be told that? Does anyone? I know what seatbelts do. They are self explanatory.
It's enough to drive you to consider tax avoidance.
