Welcome to aussiecon.net. Here you will find commentary and comments on politics from a broadly conservative Australian perspective.
We'll be dipping into a random selection of state, national and international events and examining them from the point view that our past, our heritage, the legacy of the people who came before us has an inherent value and that we shouldn't heedlessly throw away those values which have made Australia one of the greatest places in the world to live and enjoy life.
If you want to know where I'm coming from, reading Roger Scruton would be a good start. I find his common sense and his ability to express profound concepts in everyday language a great inspiration. I also admire his resolve to express conservative ideals which run counter to the orthodoxy of the majority of the academic and political elite. Other authors I read include Leon Kass, David Frum, Daniel Pipes, Daniel Born, Karl Popper, Paul Johnson (the historian), Robert Bork, Andrew Norton and Frederick Hess.
If you find the posts here though provoking, whether or not you agree with them, feel free to add a comment - the more debate the better I say. I would like to see discussion threads develop which actually penetrate a subject in some depth so if you're making a contribution, try to stay on the topic and develop the line of thought under discussion, I've noticed many comments pages descend into a slanging match in which slogans are thrown back and forth to no great effect. It would be nice to avoid that if at all possible.
